Extension of stay in Ukraine

Citizens of other countries can enter Ukraine if they have a visa or 90/180 entry regime. This gives the right to legally stay temporarily in the country on passport documents. But if you need to stay in Ukraine longer and for some reason you could not issue a temporary residence permit or are waiting for an immigration permit, citizenship, then the legislator has provided for such a procedure as extension of stay in Ukraine.

Below, we will consider three options when you will be able to submit the necessary documents.

First: if you have entered on a transit visa and are forced to stay in the country due to emergencies, then you will be allowed to stay in Ukraine for the amount of time required to eliminate such circumstances and only with supporting documents.

Second: you entered on a long-term visa (a visa type “D”) to apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit, but for some reason beyond your control, you could not apply to the migration service . In this case, you can extend the period of stay of foreigners in Ukraine, for a sufficient period for registration of these documents – a maximum of one month.

Third: whether you are on a short-stay visa or a citizen of a visa-free country, this is the most common case that our company’s clients apply for. Here is a list of grounds defined by law:

Visa-free entry into Ukraine for countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan

  1. Treatment (care for a sick family member). To do this, you must provide a medical certificate, which will indicate the need for inpatient treatment for a certain period. All certificates are checked, so we do not advise you to buy fakes online. This threatens a fine and a ban on entering Ukraine for a period of three years;
  2. Pregnancy and childbirth. Accordingly, a certificate from a medical institution is also required.
  3. Registration of inheritance. In this case, the confirmation will be the presence of an application for acceptance of the inheritance;
  4. Applying for immigration or Ukrainian citizenship. Here the confirmation is issued by the migration service itself, after submitting the documents for the relevant services, you will receive a certified statement by the employee to submit a package of documents for consideration.

    We have listed the most common cases for applying for this service, but there are others. Moreover, the list specified in the legislation is not exhaustive.

    The process of registration of the extension of the stay takes 3-5 working days and for this period your passport document will be taken away from you, as there will be a mark of extension indicating the date until which you are allowed to stay in Ukraine. After registration, you should not go to other countries, as the continuation stamp is canceled and you will not be allowed back.

    I want to pay attention to some more nuances. When submitting documents you will be required to provide:

  • confirmation of residence in Ukraine (for this you need to find housing, the owner of which will agree to write a statement that he is not against your residence there. And he will be asked to provide his passport and title deeds);
  • the presence of a host party (a natural or legal person who will bear all the costs associated with your stay in the country).

In case of violation of the established procedure for staying on the territory of Ukraine, the foreigner and the host party will incur appropriate administrative fines.

Also, one of the important conditions is to apply no earlier than ten and no later than three working days before the end of the stay (visa).

Despite this, it is easy to collect documents and submit them to the migration service to extend your stay in Ukraine, but do not forget that mistakes, lack of documentary evidence of good reasons and incorrect calculation of deadlines can lead to denial of registration.
